Packing cubes show up on every "travel essentials" list. But are they actually useful, or just another thing to buy before a trip? We'll give you a straight answer.
The short version: they won't change how much fits in your bag. They will change how quickly you find what you're looking for at 6am in a hotel room with a 7am checkout.
What they actually do
Packing cubes organize your bag. They don't compress it.
This is the most common misconception. Packing cubes give each category of clothing its own container. Tops go in one cube, underwear and socks in another, tomorrow's outfit in a third. When you need something, you pull out one cube instead of digging through a full suitcase.
They're particularly useful for:
- Multi-destination trips where you live out of your bag instead of unpacking
- Shared luggage where one cube per person keeps things separate
- Weekend trips where you open your bag multiple times a day and need fast access
- Checked bags that get searched at security and need to be repacked quickly
If your goal is to fit more into a smaller bag, look at compression bags instead. Packing cubes solve an organization problem, not a volume problem.

Three things that separate a good packing cube from a useless one
Not all packing cubes are equal. Here is what actually matters:
Zipper quality
A packing cube zipper gets opened and closed hundreds of times across dozens of trips. Cheap zippers split or snag. Look for YKK zippers, which are the industry standard for durability.
Mesh panel on the face
A mesh panel lets you see the contents without unzipping. This sounds minor until you're at baggage claim trying to locate your toiletries fast.
Dimensions that fit real luggage
Some cubes are sized to look good in product photos but don't actually nest well inside a standard carry-on or checked bag. Check that the dimensions match your suitcase before buying.
